Due to violations of the chancellor's order (and the governor's now-defunct order), the lakefront is now closed. The violators were naughty sailing team members who decided to do a little "racing practice" on their own despite the standing restrictions. How they got ahold of sails, we're not quite sure. Now no one will be able to sail for at least another month, and probably much longer.
The governor's order was recently nullified by the Republican-controlled "supreme court", a.k.a. den of rats, but Chancellor Blank stare's order curtailing activities on campus was not. Since last week the entire Union and Hoofer area including the canopy has been fenced off like a construction zone. To say it's bizarre would be an understatement. We blame the sailing team members, but in fairness, we probably wouldn't have been able to sail (officially) until July anyway, and there were other factors too in the chancellor's newest order.
So here are some things you can do in lieu of Hoofer sailing:
1. Stay at home and play with your little man.
2. Dig out that scantily-clad Barbie® doll you got for winning Commodore's Cup a few years ago and play with that.
3. Play around with a sailing simulator. Think of it as practice for this fall's online learning.
4. Play video games.
5. Attend this year's unofficial Pirate's Day event!
For info, email the commodore or the puppetmaster. By using private boats, we can circumvent the University's order and get sloshed while doing it!
One problem with sailing by the rulez is that it is invariably done with people who are not "part of your household" and thus everyone must remain at a safe distance, which is impossible on most boats. Even on the large keelboats, it's impractical. Hence the UW's closure of official sailing.
Would you even want to go sailing or hang out at a Friday social while wearing a surgical mask, and with everyone else wearing one too? That is just so messed up. Well you don't have to wear a mask on private boats!

Is that true about Sailing Team members getting caught sailing? Or are you just pulling that out of your hat?
ReplyDeleteThis is entirely false and a complete fabrication by the administrator(s) of this blog. The sailing team has not had an on-the-water practice since last fall. They've taken the Safer at Home order very seriously - unlike the administrator(s) of this blog, who had to have disobeyed that order to take the picture of the T dock included in their post from a few weeks ago. Smacks of the usual hypocrisy that is the hallmark of this blog. Don't believe the team hasn't been practicing? Their 420s are still on their winter storage racks on the lakefront deck, where they've been since October of 2019. I mean come on "Fleet Commander," we know you hate the sailing team, but making things up in a pathetic effort to make them look bad is low even for you.

ReplyDelete"Fact Checker"? That's a laugh. We didn't say the whole sailing team held a practice. Read the post. From what I heard, it was two sailing team members, and they were probably sailing Zests, not 420s. I will admit it's second hand news, but the source is reliable and would have no reason to make that up.

I do like how you call them "their" 420s, though... at least that's being honest. They're advertised as available to all club members (provided you have a rating), but they never really are.
The Team's 420's are owned by the sailing team outright and are therefore their property. I think that they're supposed to turn their old ones over to the club when they get new boats though.

They could fill the remains of the Tech Fleet with concrete and sink near the footings as a breakwater?

Anonymous. The non-African-American Sailing Club members are not racists. They are segregationists. The Club Membership does act like an exclusive non-African-American organization mainly because it is how they want it. If they wanted it to be inclusive of African-Americans, it has been abundantly clear for years and years that they had the opportunities to do so, and chose not to.
ReplyDeleteYou cannot say Hoofers is segregationist just because there are no blacks in the club. Has it occurred to you that maybe they don't want to join? Maybe they would rather do something else. Do most frats have black members? If you don't grow up exposed to a particular thing, you probably won't have an interest in it later in life. Maybe African-americans by and large do not grow up sailing. Nor is Africa historically known as a seafaring peoples, unlike some other parts of the world such as Scandinavia, Micronesia, even South America and China to some extent. Joining Hoofers is also a lot like joining the military as an enlisted person, with no opportunity for advancement, so that may be a factor too. In any case, it is all pretty much moot this year.
