Dirty rotten crooks
We are approaching the 11 month mark since the Yu Chen tragedy last spring, and in May it will be one year. Yet, the sheriff's report and other records are still being withheld. We're unsure whether to belabor this story or just let it go. The unlawful withholding of public records is such a problem in Wisconsin that we decided to collect the contacts for the major area newspapers below. Anyone who cares might think about contacting at least one of these and suggesting an (updated) story:

The Progressive Magazine (Madison)
Capital Times:

Wis. State Journal contacts. The Wis. State Journal and Cap Times have covered the incident, although not lately, and the Milw. Journal-Sentinel had one brief note on it right after it occurred.
Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel:
Opinion/Editorials: 414-224-2143; jsedit@journalsentinel.com

Chicago Tribune:

The public records problem in Wisconsin is getting worse, not better. Without unfettered access to public records, there is little to keep public employees from indulging their natural tendencies and becoming crooks.

Thank you for posting the links to the various news outlets. Here is the link for the New York Times https://www.nytimes.com/newsgraphics/2016/news-tips/index.html
ReplyDeleteWhat date was it that Yu Chen was killed? Can it really be almost one year now? Let's see if we can coordinate a memorial on the anniversary of his death. That would be respectful. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHere's the site for the DA's website. https://da.countyofdane.com/
ReplyDeleteEmail for Ismael is, according to that site, danecoda@da.wi.gov
Email the DA and ask what is going on. DA gets enough emails then he'll know that requires some update to the people he serves.
Maybe we can get the Tower to blast the steam whistle on the date and time that Yu Chen's life was ended?
ReplyDeleteFor those inquiring about dates, and so on, see this:

It is a park bench at James Madison park now assigned to honor Yu Chen, with a plaque of his name.
Is having one's name on a park bench an honor? Maybe better than nothing but it does not seem enough. Nor does it help solve the problem of incompetent DA.
Who was driving the boat?
ReplyDeleteNo one was driving the boat and no one was killed. See, without an investigation people just go missing in Wisconsin. Or, nothing is said when their remains are found churning in the outwash from a boat's props. Harsh? Yes. True? Yes.
ReplyDeleteThe blankets of snow will leave when the blanket of silence re: Yu Chun is lifted.
ReplyDeleteGoing to be a snowy summer.
New instructions for sailing students: If you have an emergency on the water for the love of gawd don't, repeat don't wave your arms in the air! That will only make matters worse. Trust me, you don't wanna know how. It just will.
ReplyDeleteWhat ever happened with the staff at UW-Rescue? Same folks as last spring or were they are all given desk jobs while this hullabaloo blows over?
ReplyDeleteThat is a scary thought, that the only consquences for the motor boat drivers will be desk jobs for a while. How about having a "write-to-the-DA-day" to get things moving? What other forums could we advertize this in and can someone please suggest it there?
ReplyDeleteTo get attention we need to bring this out of the shadows. The UW Terrace is now filling with happy spring/summer people bringing their dollars to spend on UW Union food, beverage and merchandise.
ReplyDeleteWhy not paint an old Tech sail with 'What Happened to Yu Chen', call WKOW-TV, WISC-TV and raise the sail and sail in front of the terrace. Back and forth, back and forth. Let the local news team capture on film reactions from the Terrace crowd and when someone from the Union (or UW-Rescue) stops the boat and orders it back to shore. WOW. If that doesn't get attention and action from the general public and news media nothing will.
To recap: 1 old tech sail painted 2. Sail on a Friday afternoon evening 3. Contact local news media.
Let's get this into the light where it deserves to be. The story needs to be told.
This is a great idea. If there is no news by May 31, the one year anniversary of the tragedy then we should absolutely should do this. You can't get to much on a tech sail in big letters, but how about "Mr. Ozanne, What happened to Yu Chen?"
ReplyDeleteIt would not necessarily have to be a tech sail either, it could be an old FJ or 420 or other sail. Even an old bed sheet, have you ever heard of a "sheet bend"? If you sail the kboats you should have. It works not only on two lines but on a line and a SHEET.
May 31 is only a month away.
A Tech would be able to hug the shore line much better. Just sail it back and forth in front of the Terrace. How about questions marks 4-5 with the text, 'Justice for Yu Chen'
ReplyDeleteThat will fit on the sail. Plus, Tech sails are all around. Pull one out of the junk bin and paint with day-glo colors. Just one side of the sail.
Glad we have some concurrence!
June 1st is a Friday and the Terrace will be packed with many onlookers.
Could this be the dashcam footage for UW-Rescue leading-up to their intersection with Yu Chen? https://youtu.be/Kz8rjZiADts?t=1m32s
ReplyDeleteAnd the countdown to the 1 year tragiversary with ZERO information from the authorities. It has been 11 months now.
ReplyDelete31 Days until the May 31st Tragiversary of Yu Chen's homicide.
Good question posed from way above. What happened to the UW Rescue staff that were on the boat? Suspended w/out pay? Terminated? Or, are they back on the water full throttle?
ReplyDeleteWhy doesn't the DA come-out with the finding? This is goes beyond normal dear friends. It is just a wet blanket with some skewed optics being pushed on the Club and public.
Feel, Friends, the true liberal values at UW-Madison and the precious DA! You could have thought sweeping a death under the rug in Madison would be so easy!
