Cold sober

Comin' up, it's COMMODORE'S CUP July 18-26!

C-Cup '14 will have all kinds of fun including: sailing, urinating, throwing things, vomiting, mooning the Betty Lou, and... NO BEER.

Yes, read that again: NO BEER!

The plans were originally to have beer service, but this changed due to the new rules which are starting to get really annoying. As explained now on the C-Cup Facebook page:

"There will be no beer service this year as our budget cannot pay to have paid security at our event."

Wow. Some of you already new that, but this is a landmark event--a sea change in HSC operations. Of curse, you can walk back and forth to the Terrace and get beer, but that just ain't the same. What kind of party is it when you have to run to the nearest bar every time you want another cup of beer..? Aack.

Hey you! Lemme see that water bottle!

  1. Wisconsin Union beer is plentiful and only a few steps away. For most of us this is hardly the end of the world or the ruination of Hoofers. And, thanks to the new policy the cost of being in C-Cup just dropped $20 dollars!

The 1% that will complain about the new rules should consider meeting with an Alcoholic Assessment Counselor. Seriously, get help now!

I for one am not crazy about having to subsidize folks getting slobber-snockered out of my wallet. A few beers at an event are fine. Folks can buy their own beer if they want/need it. That freedom exists for everyone.

  2. Was I not previously allowed to pee at Hoofers? When is vomiting happening? We haven't been able to moon Betty Lou for years now.
Technically, we cannot bring terrace beer over to the canopy, or on a Sloop, etc. That's considered "carry-in alcohol."
And, of course, no water bottles. Clear Union cups that you can see through (NO KOOZIES!!), but it'll only be water or soda in those, anyway. SODA! ACK! I might get diabetes!!

  3. How can it be carry-in beer if The Union encompasses Hoofers? Is there a specific link to the official policy?

  4. @Kracken: You give me an idea... Did anyone ever notice that urine is about the same color as beer? I'm not sure exactly what the idea is, I haven't had my mid-afternoon shot yet.

As for Terrace beer, that is not carry-in as several regulars will tell you. "Carry-in" is that hip flask you're wearing, or the lip-operated hat-bong spigot pump made using a catheter bag...

How sad that we now have to smuggle alcohol in to Hoofer events.

  5. I don't get it! We've acted like spoiled children for so many years, why would they ask us to be responsible adults now?

  6. Hey, the price for commodores cup is now $20! I paid $65 last week!? That doesn't seem right. How can I get the difference refunded?

  7. It is not carry-in. There are "special events" guards screening people entering the Hoofers area. I don't like the new order security setup. Sure, on one level it's no big deal. But that's how freedom is lost -- one little step at a time. During the World Cup I had these rent-a-cops tell me to "move along" to avoid blocking hallways as I was watching the game in the Rathskeller, although everything was totally cool and I wasn't blocking anyone. Why should people have to put up with this kind of bureaucratic nonsense? Should Hoofers pay for beer? No. But should people have the freedom to make their own decisions, and carry in a beer if they'd like? Yes.

  8. I think all of this is extreme on the Union's part. A few drinks in moderation on a nice sunny day is not a problem.

All of this seems like a solution looking for a problem. Or, is it just the perception that bad things are happening?

What are the incidents that happened to cause this new policy? I cannot think of any incidents that come to mind. This is all part of a dangerous trend towards taking away freedoms and monitoring the citizenry. By the way,how many CCTV cameras need to be pointed at all of us?

What is really concerning to me is how this policy emerged slowly like some kind of gorilla in the mist. Where was the open air discussion that invited all stakeholders to the table? What problems were meant to be addressed?

All of this just makes me shake my head.

  9. Beer will get you through times of no sailing better than sailing will get you though times of no beer.
