Hoofer Haven
In a recent email to J-sailors, our illustrious fleet captain (a convicted felon?) wrote:
"Your instructor will check to see that you have done these hours before logging your new rating."
He claims that paid instructors have to do 3 work hours before getting any J ratings--just like everybody else--and then another 3 to maintain their fleet ratings each year.
Having been an instructor for several years now, I can confirm that instructors do not have to do J work hours to maintain their J ratings each year. They may technically be required to, but guess who enforces that rule..? There is nothing wrong with the requirement itself--it's a good one in that it helps promote involvement (of a sort) by club members. What irks me and others is the duplicity of BOC who claim they have to do those work hours too. Then they'll tell about all the other work they supposedly do for the club... like getting hammered at BOC meetings twice a month, and pier-in. Woo hoo.
As for having ex-cons on the BOC, I for one am all about second chances, but abusing and harassing innocent people while at the same time allowing ex-cons to run HSC just isn't right. In Jeff's defense, there are other felons working at the Union and Hoofers too, as well as some ex-employees.
fel·on 1 (fĕl′ən)
n.
1. Law One who has committed a felony.
2. Archaic An evil person.
Note that you don't have to be convicted of a felony to be considered a felon; all you have to do is to have committed a felony. Many people get away with their crimes--especially State employees.
On a related topic, the website notes the increase in membership prices this season (except for instructors and their buddies, of course, who still get free memberships) and states:
"we will be increasing our Summer and Annual memberships rates on June 1, 2014 by only $10 for students and $15 for Union and Faculty/Staff."
Yet, on the membership page, the Union member rate is going from $295 to $315. That's $20 guys, not 15. Maybe you should take a break from texting during math class next fall. Note that membership rates are in effect going up an additional $5 because the deposit refund is being reduced from $65 to $60 (not that anyone gets their deposit back anyway.)

The truth hurts, but it is a prerequisite to cleansing the system and restoring integrity. Now if only we could get rid of the apathetic Wisconsin Union administrators who allow this sort of thing to happen and facilitate it in a student club.
ReplyDeleteWhy is okay for 40 year old alcoholics to hang around the club all the time? Many of them do so simply because they have a free lifetime membership. The Hoofer environment itself likely contributes to the incipient criminal tendencies of many, both employees and general club members.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a child, I did childish things. When I became an adult I put childish things behind me. Paul, I messed up 13 years ago, I'll be the first to admit it. but how long should ones mistakes haunt someone? I don't believe I have ever wronged you. Why then are you outing me? Please, as a decent human being, take this down.
ReplyDeleteSometime I'd like to hear your story, I've only heard pieces from the other side, but I know that is biased. A person should not be judged by the worst of their days.

Jeff has said and done some dumb shit in the past. Hell, he continues to say dumb shit on occasion. But, he's a GREAT fleet captain. He searched high and low for a quality replacement J24, got another great cruising boat coming, and helped raise a sunken boat at the pier for no more than a cup of beer and a pat on the back. I don't remember seeing any of you haters in the water helping out on that one. So, if you've got something to say to Jeff, do what I do and say it to his face, not on your stupid blog.
ReplyDeleteWOW, I didnt know he was a felon. but he's done amazing work and deserves a second chance. I've seen him help alot of people that he didn't have to and hes down there every day. Clearly you've never met the guy and have no idea what you're talking about. I saw him raise Joe's sunken boat too, Jeff never asked for anything. I thought this was a hoofers sailing blog, my mistake. I agree with Parsec, you should meet him sometime face to face and get the real story. The fact that you haven't tells me that this blog is a fake. Goodbye.
ReplyDeleteSome club leaders have graduated from childish things like felonies and moved on to downright vicious things. They form a clique and throw stolen money at eachother while shunning other decent people who have just as much right to teach and participate (I won't name names, unlike one commenter above who got that name wrong anyway). Then they take offense at complaints like this post.
ReplyDeleteI hear certain names around the lakefront on a regular basis, and only when the individual in question is *not* around, or is out of earshot. That's worse than this blog because I am pretty sure most of what is said is false innuendo. But that's just standard practice at Hoofers. FYI: slandering someone to your buddies on the lakefront does not qualify as protected speech.
Talk to Wisc. union management if you want this blog to go away. Maybe they can commit more felony perjury and get the court to force us to take it down, or maybe they can get UW police to intimidate and abuse us, as they have others. Or maybe instead, they can begin the process of correcting the wrongs they have perpetrated, although that seems unlikely given the mental condition of the union director and some of his staff. They are what many Hoofer leaders aspire to be.
Yes, we have all done things we regret and have hopefully learned from those mistakes. That is call growing and maturation.
ReplyDeleteFreedom is messy. Fascists, White Supremacists and others can and do have websites to extol their world view.
One day this anonymous troll with a blog will go back under the bridge, spin a cocoon and re-emerge a year later as something beautiful and fluffy; flitting about the flowers and pollinating good cheer.
Go fine troll, spin that cocoon and find that inner beauty that will give the world more hope, love and joy.
Others like Thomas Paine and Benjamin Franklin also used anonymous publication, because they were forced to. Your lumping patriots in with wackos is the kind of typical misinformation/misdirection those in authority use to try to manipulate others. Nor can individuals always do what they would prefer to do. Sometimes they are actually, really, horribly abused by those in power, and have limited recourse.
ReplyDeleteThat said, it's Pirate's Day!!
Mr. Fleet Commander.
ReplyDeleteYou have been around forever,
and all you do is blow smoke,
You will not be around forever, but will forever be blowing smoke.
If the HSC club has given you so much conviction, maybe you should run for the board and start the dialogue to make positive change. Being negative doesn't get you anywhere. Kinda like the Republicans. You are no better than a tea party member at best and that is a compliment.
I hope you can grow up someday and join a real yacht club like real men do, instead of concerning yourself with a student club that you have certainly outgrown.
Mr. Fleet Commander.
You have been around forever,
and all you do is blow smoke,
You will not be around forever, but will forever be blowing smoke
Where there's smoke there's fire.
