Save the Terrace & piers

Sept. 1 UPDATE: Architectural drawings produced by overpaid draftsmen are flying around now. Here are a couple of scary ones (at right). I feel sick as I type this. For one, the tunnel is slated to be removed! Then there is the overall ridiculous floorplan redesign resulting in a smaller shop, remanufactured lounge and chartroom, etc. The "boathouse" will be 10% bigger (woo hoo!)--but the canoes will actually be further from the water. Is it just me, or is that fundamentally retarted? Also, the new lakefront access is apparently off to the northeast, thus providing a poorer view of approaching storms while at the same time offering less protection from the rain!

The lower drawing shows the concretization of the lakefront. Does it remind anyone of Indiana..? This is sick stuff, designed by guys in suits working in high-rise office buildings (with input from deranged Union managers). Frank Lloyd Wright must be rolling over in his grave.

[Original post:] As many already know, Union Director Mark Guthier helped force through a referendum in 2006 slapping all UW-Madison students with an extra $192/year in seg fees for the Union (amounting to an extra $200 million students will have to pay over the next 30 years). The referendum failed twice before finally passing on the third attempt.

The extra fees were supposed to be used to (1) raze and re-build Union South (what a friggin waste), and (2) to renovate any run-down parts of Memorial Union and to bring it up to ADA code (i.e. wheelchair access). Guthier and his delusional, drug-crazed staff have since hatched a more grandiose plan for the $200 million. After all, that's far more money than they ever needed for actual renovations, so they've decided to add a huge, glass "lounge" to the theatre lobby. This will turn the west part of the terrace (above Hoofers) into a sunset-blocking monstrosity.

You can get more info and/or help stop this madness HERE.

Also, come to the open forum at the Union next Tues (Aug 30) if you can and voice your objections.

  1. Did anybody see Justin Cherniak royally bomb the pier this week? Rumor is that he was so drunk he couldn't tell where the wind was coming from.

  2. Sounds like you didn't see it, so as usual it's just more rumors.

  3. Looks like more than rumors. From the instructor listserv:

    Hey everyone,

I hate to have to ask this, but due to circumstances beyond my control (talk to Dave if you're really interested), I will not be able to teach my J29 lesson tomorrow night from 5:15 - 8:15. Can anyone pick it up for me? Unless I get someone to cover it or things change, I'll have to cancel it. It is currently full and they are predicting decent wind tomorrow.

I'll happily cook dinner or buy a pitcher for anyone who can cover this for me.

    Thanks in advance,
    Justin Cherniak

Is crashing into piers a circumstance beyond his control?

  4. Don't know about that, but here's a video of Justin C. "teaching" a J24 lesson last year, if that's any indication:

In fact, these sorts of screw-ups happen almost every day, but unless there is major equipment damage, they're almost always overlooked, especially if the perp throws good instructor parties.

  5. Good; get rid of the Tunnel! Better would be to get rid of the offices too to build member work spaces to fix boats and have a snackbar or coffee kiosk, and not employee dens. Bad enough already there remain so many employed parasites around this place; don't make it too comfortable!

  6. Get rid of the tunnel?! Are you nuts? The Tunnel is the ultimate phallic symbol. It epitomizes Hoofers, or at least it used to. The Tunnel was HSC's main social networking site until online lesson signup pretty much neutered it. Which means, I suppose, that we could get rid of it as part of the overall mutilation of Hoofers.

  7. If the Mayan Calendar correctly predicts the end of the world, then all the worry and fuss will be moot. Big Glass viewing box and what a show they will all see from their air conditioned 'Skybox' seats.
Depending on the hijinks and Tom Foolery witnessed, it could be the end of many Hoofer Sailing special events.

  8. @Ackbar, I was going to comment positively on the whole theme of the original post, but your comment diverted my attention. Saying a tunnel is phallic is like saying a boner is vaginal... I am very confused, please enlighten me.

  9. Hmm, yes, good point-it's more of a yonic symbol. But imagine wrecking that whole wing of Memorial Union, leaving only the tunnel standing, like a giant concrete gopher burrow above ground. Then its phallic nature would be more obvious.

Either way, if it's a phallic/yonic symbol, then what do the little people running up and down it represent..? :D

  10. Justin is in the news again. He has sent his sailing resume (sans crashes, naturally) to all the keelboat instructors, begging for a testout.

It is possible that he is having trouble because everybody knows he's incompetent.
