Extra lessons are now available, taught by HOI Dave Elsmo.
Tonight is "Rig tuning" (6 PM on the lakefront) for those who want to learn how to maximize a boat's power and win races. This lesson will cover stay tension, car positioning, halyard tension, weight placement, etc. This is only open to instructors (because most of them don't already know that stuff?).
General club members aren't expected to win races, so they are not eligible to take this class. Of course, they're not eligible for a lot of other instructor goodies, either.... General (i.e. paying) club members are mainly around to provide cash for the instructors.
Next Tues Aug 23 will be "Sail Trim". In this lesson we'll cover proper sail trim for all conditions at all points of sail. Again, not open to paying club members.
Huh. I actually teach all this stuff myself from time to time on the keelboats, as do some of the other KB instructors, so why aren't these lessons open to any Hoofer Sailing Club member..? They're not even full (as of the time of this post), and general club members are the ones who pay Elsmo's salary. Evidently he thinks it makes more sense for him to teach it to the "instructors", and then they can try to pass some of it on to the plebes.

Just like the US, Hoofers has a 0.001% ruling elite. If membership fees are like taxes, only the chattle that join each year with the aspiration of becoming one of the elite pay the club fees. They subsidize those who rule the big yachts but pay no club fees. Seldom, though, do they actually ascend to sailing and racing keels. Why? The system is rigged to keep them away from the elite boats. There is a reason they are called Lower Fleets.
ReplyDeleteThe sooner you realize that this is the way it is then you can move on. Otherwise you are just crowing at the sun because it rises in the east and sets in the west.
Yeah, Dave Elsmo needs to go at this point. He's corrupted up the whole system too badly. The club is barely recognizable anymore.
ReplyDeleteAt some point someone will look at the club demographics and notice a huge hole where the African-American Club members should be. What is going on? More institutionalized racism at the UW?

ReplyDeleteIf investigated the numbers would indicate a huge disparity. Is the Hoofers Council addressing this issue? They need to get out ahead of this before there are protesters being filmed by the country club on the lake shore. But that may be what it takes to bring change.
ReplyDeleteThe new UW initiative to provide multi-cultural and diversity training to incoming students is really needed. REALLY NEEDED! It is an outrage that the club has snubbed or not tried to recruit African-American students. In this day and age it is disgraceful.
I remember Admiral Akbars favourite Hoofer Instructor (JC) had one African-American student in a Tech class and yelling to her, 'You go girl!' Nice going dufus. Half the people on the shore cringed hearing that. I think he got his multicultural sensativity training watching MTV?

ReplyDeleteWhite male instructor yelling that from the Tech Pier at a female African-American student. But to be fair, JC was making an effort not to be mean or disparaging but to encourage the student. The language was unfortunate.
ReplyDeleteAbove comments regarding race miss the point that most people of any color are uncomfortable in a culture of drinking. People who drink or drink too much become happy, sad,violent, sloppy and boorish at best. Think how popular the club would be without the dominant culture of alcohol. I've seen it firsthand during open sailing, students get turned-off to the let's get hammered and party on the water mentality.

The advanced topics Dave presents to instructors find their way in to lessons. These are finer points that can be broached in a lesson for advanced students. Dave brings valuable insights to the club.

Wake up people.....Liberal Madison is 72% WHITE! Worse, U/W only has 480 Black students. So where are you going to find the people you seek? They have to want to COME to a lily-white school They do not! Our country has made it certain that most of them could not afford it anyway, nor pass the entrance exams. Why do you not all quit talking and start READING. Get the facts. Make your OWN opinion and do not simply accept what you hear from other uninformed people as YOUR opinion? Often? They. Are. Wrong.
